Beaumont Rag, Eck Robertson's Version
Beaumont Rag is the quintessential Texas fiddle tune. This version comes from Texas fiddler Eck Robertson, who was the first commercially recorded country musician. This is played on an Eduard Reichert fiddle.

This version of Bonaparte's Retreat comes from Kentucky fiddler William Stepp. Aaron Copland lifted the melody and used it as the theme for the Hoedown movement of his Rodeo ballet. Most versions of Bonaparte's Retreat are played as marches, but this one is is a breakdown. This is played on a Randall Smith fiddle tuned to DDAD.

Melvin Wine was a well-known fiddler from West Virginia, and is one of my favorite old time fiddlers. Cold Frosty Morning is one of best-known tunes. His version was distinct from most tunes of this name. This is played on an Eduard Reichert fiddle.

Although this tune is called Hamilton's Special Breakdown, it's more of a rag than a breakdown. It was written by Alabama fiddler Y. Z. Hamilton, and has also been recorded under the name G Rag.

Melvin Wine called this tune Jack of Diamonds, though I have heard other tunes by the same name that were totally different. It sounds a lot like the Pattyroller Song that I play on the banjo.

This is a little-known ragtime tune from Alabama, recorded by a group called the Dixie Ramblers. There have been several groups by that name, but this one was an old time stringband, active in Alabama in the 1930s.

Sail Away Ladies is a great old time tune, also known as Sally Ann and Great Big Taters. My version is heavily influenced by Uncle Dave Macon's early recording of this tune. This is played on an Eduard Reichert fiddle.
